Mahogany - mahogany

Mahogany - mahogany

An evergreen tree of the Meliaceae family (APG classification: Meliaceae). It can grow to 30 meters in height and 1.8 meters in diameter. The bark is reddish brown and bald in scales. The leaves are alternate and even-pinnately compound. The leaflets are 3-4 pairs, ovate or ovate-oblong, distorted, about 5 cm long, and pointed at the tip. In August, it produces panicles and produces pale yellow-green flowers about 1 cm in diameter. The calyx has 5 shallow lobes and 5 petals. The stamens are fused together in a tubular shape. The fruit is an ovate capsule 10-15 cm long, ripens dark brown in October-November, and has 5 lobes. The seeds are broad-winged, sword-shaped, 5-6 cm long. It is found in the southernmost part of Florida in North America and the West Indies. The heartwood is deep reddish brown, hard, heavy and strong. It has a beautiful luster when polished, making it an excellent material for furniture and interior decoration, and has been exported to Europe since ancient times. The closely related Mahogany, S. macrophylla Kurz, is distributed from Central America to South America and is now simply called mahogany. It can reach a height of 45 meters and a diameter of 2 meters, and its leaflets are lanceolate and oblong, measuring 10 to 15 centimeters in length, making it larger than mahogany, and its flowers are white or greenish-white. It grows quickly and produces good seeds, so it is planted in various places and used as a lining tree or in gardens. Similar woods from the Meliaceae, Fabaceae, Sapotaceae and Myrtaceae families are also commonly called mahogany.
