Picture Scroll of the Horse Racing and Imperial Proceedings - Komakurabegyoukou Emaki

Picture scroll. Two volumes remain. Owned by Seikado in Tokyo and the Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum in Osaka. Both are Important Cultural Properties. Based on the "Koma-Keibe" chapter of the "Eiga Monogatari," the Seikado version depicts the scene of Jotomon-in Shoshi's visit to Fujiwara no Yorimichi's residence, Koyano-in, on September 14, 1024 (Manju 1), with attendants following her as she carries a palanquin. The Izumiichi version follows the Seikado version, and depicts the visit of Emperor Goichijo and the Crown Prince to Koyoin on September 19th. It shows scenes outside the gate, followed by a scene inside the gate of the Crown Prince entering the palace, then scenes of the East Palace and Izumidono, with nobles and ladies-in-waiting waiting in the palace, and a dragon-headed, eel-necked boat floating on the pond. Both volumes were painted by the same artist, in a vibrant style with deep colors, and are valuable materials that convey the lifestyles and customs of Heian aristocrats. Created in the Kamakura period (14th century), the artist is unclear.
