Kiyosuke Fujiwara

Japanese:
Kiyosuke Fujiwara
Year of death: 1177.7.17 (Jisho 1.6.20)
Year of birth: 1104
He was a descendant of the Suemochi line of the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. His father was Sakyo no Daifu Akisuke, and his mother was the daughter of Nagato no Kami Takashina Yoshito. His first name was Takanaga. Due to discord with his father, his promotion in official rank stagnated, and he only served as the Empress Dowager's Grand Assistant, Junior Fourth Rank. As he continued to hold no rank or position until his mid-40s, he was not blessed with many opportunities to compose poetry, and his first appearance in a public waka event was in the "Kyuan Hyakushu" in 1150. His poem "Nagareba Mata Kono Koro ni Yashinobaremu Sadashi to Misshi Yozo Ima Koihishiki," which was included in the Hyakunin Isshu, describes the feelings he had during the difficult times of his 30s. After that, he gained the trust of Emperor Sutoku, Emperor Nijō, Kujō Kanezane, and others, and was active in waka poetry, serving as a judge in numerous poetry contests. After his father's death, he inherited the Rokujo family of waka poets, and together with Fujiwara no Shunzei of the Mikohidari family, occupied a leading position in the world of waka poetry. In addition to the "Kiyosuke Asonshu" family anthology, he compiled the private anthology "Zoku Shika Wakashu." He wrote waka studies books such as "Ougi-sho," "Waka Ichiji-sho," "Fukuro-soshi," and "Waka Shogaku-sho," and transcribed and edited the "Kokin Wakashu" and "Gosen Wakashu," making a great achievement as a waka scholar. On the other hand, as a waka poet, he composed waka poems in a wide variety of styles, as described in "Kasen Rakugaki," which states, "His style is diverse. He is interesting, but also lonely. He has a lofty style, and I wonder if he will lag behind." <References> "Senzai Wakashu and its Surroundings" ("Taniyama Shigeru Works Collected," vol. 3), Inoue Muneo, "Research on the Biographies of Poets of the Late Heian Period, Revised Edition"
