Kohoan

Japanese: 孤篷庵 - こほうあん
Kohoan
This is a subtemple of the Rinzai sect Daitoku-ji Temple in Kita-ku, Kyoto City. It is said to have been founded by Kogetsu Sogan and is located to the west of the Daitoku-ji temple grounds. Kobori Enshu built a small hermitage within Ryuko-in Temple and moved to its current location in 1643, but it was destroyed by fire and later rebuilt with assistance from Matsudaira Fumai. The main hall, shoin study and teahouse Bosen are designated Important Cultural Properties. The gardens are designated as a historic site and a place of scenic beauty, and consist of the front garden of the main hall, the front garden of Bosen, the front garden of the shoin study and the front garden of Sanun-doko. The front garden of the main hall is a borrowed scenery garden, and the front garden of the shoin study is a dry landscape garden. The temple's treasures include the Ido tea bowl (meizaemon), a National Treasure, and the calligraphy of Daito Kokushi (→ Myocho), an Important Cultural Property.
