Value consciousness

Japanese: 価値意識 - かちいしき

The totality of value judgments that individuals or groups hold, explicitly or implicitly, in a society. It is the totality of consciousness about what is considered correct in that society, what is desirable, what behavior is desirable, what ways of thinking or human relationships are acceptable, and what behavior or ways of thinking are unacceptable. An individual has individual value standards for various aspects of his or her entire life, and the individual's value consciousness is thought to be formed as the sum of these individual value standards. An individual's thoughts and actions are largely determined by their value consciousness.

ある社会において，個人または集団が明示的または暗黙のうちにいだく価値判断の総体。その社会において何が正しいとされているのか，何が好ましいことなのか，また何が望ましい行動なのか，どういう考え方または人間関係のもち方が好ましく，どのような行動や考え方が好ましくないのかといった点についての意識の総体である。ある個人は自己の生活全体のさまざまな側面について個々の価値基準をもち，それら個々の価値基準の総体としてその個人の価値意識が形成されていると考えられる。個々人の思考や行動はその価値意識に規定されている部分が大きい。
