[ I ] Manganese sulfate(II): MnSO 4 (151.00). It is obtained by dissolving manganese dioxide in dilute sulfuric acid and evaporating it. Pale pink crystals. Depending on the evaporation temperature, various hydrates are obtained as follows: heptahydrate at 9°C or less, pentahydrate at 9-26°C, orthorhombic tetrahydrate at 26-27°C, monohydrate at 27°C or more. When heated to 280°C or more, it becomes anhydrous. The anhydrous form is a white block. Density 3.23 g cm -3 . Melting point 700°C. Decomposes at 850°C. Easily soluble in water and ethanol. The commercially available product is usually the tetrahydrate. The tetrahydrate is a pale pink crystal. Density 2.11 g cm -3 . Easily soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol. Obtained by heating Mn 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ・H 2 SO 4 ・H 2 O produced by dissolving manganese oxide(IV) monohydrate or potassium permanganate in concentrated sulfuric acid. Dark green powder. Density 3.24 g cm -3 . It decomposes at temperatures above 160 °C. When dissolved in water, it turns into a red solution, but it undergoes hydrolysis and precipitates Mn(OH) 3 .
