A battle (143-133 BC) between the Roman army and the Celtic Iberian (Celtic) tribes in Numantia (Spanish: Numancia), a strategic point in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. In the early 2nd century BC, the Roman state made the Iberian Peninsula a province and oppressed the indigenous people in the interior. To that end, the people of Numantia, some 8,000 strong, barricaded themselves in a natural fortified city in a deep gorge upstream of the Douro River, and repeatedly put up a stubborn resistance that was reportedly extremely brutal.
