A city located at the confluence of the Ganges and Jamuna rivers in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. A holy place for Hindus, formerly called Prayag. The current city was built in 1583 by Akbar, the third Mughal emperor, and became a British colony in 1801. In 1857, it became the base of the Indian Rebellion and the center of the Indian national movement before independence. It is the birthplace of Jawaharlal Nehru. It is a transportation hub where the two major rivers and the railways connecting Delhi, Kolkata (Calcutta), and Mumbai (Bombay) meet, and is a commercial center. In addition to distributing agricultural products, a new industrial district was formed on the south side of the Jamuna River in 1958, and sugar, flour, canned goods, etc. are manufactured there. The north is an orderly government district, and the south is an urban area with narrow roads. There are many Mughal era ruins, and a large park that incorporates them. Allahabad University was founded in 1887. Every year from December to January, hundreds of thousands of Hindus gather on the banks of the Ganges near the confluence to purify themselves. Population: 990,298 (2001). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
