Born: July 1, 1844. Dorset, Radipole [Died] March 27, 1894. British explorer from near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. Also spelled Cameron. The first European to cross equatorial Africa. Selected as a member of the expedition dispatched by the Royal Geographical Office in 1872 to seek news of D. Livingstone and to conduct his own exploration. After leaving Zanzibar, learning of Livingstone's death, he went to Lake Tanganyika and explored the southern part of the lake. He then explored the headwaters of the Congo River and the Zambezi River, finding the source of the latter. On November 7, 1875, he finally reached the west coast of Africa near Benguela (now Angola). In 1877, he wrote Across Africa. To the Gold Coast for Gold (1883) was co-written with R. Burton.
