〘名〙[一] 物、事柄などが三つかさなっていること。三段階になっていること。また、そのもの。みかさね。みえ。三層。三段。「三重の衝突」「三重の苦しみ」※続日本紀‐宝亀元年(770)四月戊午「発二弘願一、令レ造二三重小塔一百万基一」※ささめごと(1463‐64頃)下「心を二重三重になせにはあらずと書給へり」[二] 音の高さや、奏法にいう語。① 仏教音楽の声明(しょうみょう)で、音域を三つにわけた最高の高さの音域。初重、二重、三重と高くなる。② 平家琵琶の曲節の一つ。美しく詠嘆的なところに用い、速度はもっとも遅く、音域はもっとも高い。平曲中の聞かせどころとなる。三重のもっとも高い部分を三重の甲(かん)という。※太平記(14C後)二一「真都(しんいち)三重(ヂウ)の甲を上れば、覚一初重の乙に収(をさめ)て歌ひすましたりければ」③ 三味線楽の旋律型の一つ。浄瑠璃や長唄などで、一曲の最初や最後、または、場面の変わり目などに用いる。義太夫節には、大(おお)三重、キオイ三重、引取三重など、種類が多い。本来は高い音域の部分という意味からの名称。※浄瑠璃・曾根崎心中(1703)「すごすご帰る有様は 目も当て、られぬ 三重」④ 歌舞伎の下座音楽で用いる効果音楽としての三味線。唄は伴わない三味線曲で、まれに鳴物を伴う。曾我の対面の場に使う「対面三重」など。※歌舞伎・時桔梗出世請状(1808)二幕「『おのれ化け物、いづくまでも』と三重(さんヂウ)になり、新左衛門追ひ駈けて向うへ入る」
