Tanga (English spelling)

A port city in northeastern Tanzania, East Africa. Capital of Tanga Region. Facing the Indian Ocean, facing Pemba Island. Population 198,300 (2002 estimate). Starting point of the railway to Arusha inland, with sisal growing areas behind, it is the shipping port for sisal. Like other coastal cities, it has a history of prosperity through Arab trade. It is believed to have existed in the 17th century, and in the mid-19th century it was under the rule of the Zanzibar Kingdom, with a population of 4,000 to 5,000, and was a base for ivory trade with the inland.

東アフリカ、タンザニア北東部の港湾都市。タンガ州の州都。インド洋に臨み、ペンバ島に対する。人口19万8300(2002推計)。内陸部のアルーシャへの鉄道の起点で、サイザル麻の栽培地域を背後に控え、その積出し港となっている。沿岸部の他の都市と同じく、アラブ人の交易で栄えた歴史をもつ。17世紀には存在していたとみられ、19世紀中ごろにはザンジバル王国の治下にあり、人口4000~5000人で、内陸との象牙(ぞうげ)交易の拠点であった。
