Mount Katamuki

One of the main peaks in the Kyushu Mountains, located on the border between Oita and Miyazaki prefectures. It is 1,605 meters above sea level. Its base is made up of Paleozoic and Mesozoic layers, on top of which is the Mitate Conglomerate layer, and on top of that is the Sobosan Rhyolite. Below 600 meters there is an evergreen broadleaf forest, but at the border between 1,100 and 1,200 meters there is a Tsuga forest in the lower part and a beech forest in the upper part. The summit is divided into three rock peaks, Honkake, Ushirokake, and Maekake, and because the rocks on the west side are steep, the mountain itself appears to be tilted, hence the name Katsurayama. The view from the summit overlooking mountains such as Sobo, Kuju, Yufu, and Ookue is magnificent. It is part of Sobo Katsura Quasi-National Park. The trailhead is at Ogata and Miemachi stations on the JR Hohi Main Line, and there is a bus to the base of the mountain.

大分・宮崎県境にある九州山地の主峰の一つ。標高1605メートル。基盤は古生層、中生層、その上に見立礫岩(みたてれきがん)層があり、さらにその上に祖母山(そぼさん)流紋岩をのせている。600メートル以下は常緑広葉樹林で、1100～1200メートルを境に下部はツガ林、上部はブナ林となっている。山頂は本(ほん)傾、後(うしろ)傾、前(まえ)傾の3岩峰に分かれ、西面に岩が切り立っているため、山そのものが傾いているようにみえ、傾山の名はそれに由来する。山頂から祖母、九重(くじゅう)、由布(ゆふ)、大崩(おおくえ)などの山々を望む展望は雄大である。祖母傾国定公園の一部。登山口はJR豊肥(ほうひ)本線緒方(おがた)、三重町(みえまち)駅で、山麓(さんろく)までバスがある。
