Message from Emperor Gohanazono

Japanese: 後花園院御消息 - ごはなぞのいんごしょうそく

A letter of instruction written in kana by Emperor Gohanazono to his son, Prince Naruhito (Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado). 1 volume. The letter, formerly owned by the Takakura family and thought to be a draft written by the Emperor himself, has a date of October 1462 (Kansho 3) at the end, when the Emperor was 44 years old, two years before abdicating, and the Prince was 21. The contents of the letter give an insight into the detailed feelings the Emperor had for his son, such as being cautious about his work while sitting down, speaking in a gentle voice, focusing on scholarship and mastering public affairs, poetry, music and calligraphy, and not indulging in petting small birds.

後花園天皇が皇子成仁親王(後土御門天皇)に贈った教訓の仮名状。1巻。天皇自筆の草案と思われる高倉家旧蔵の《御教訓状》には，末尾に寛正3年(1462)10月の年記があり，時に天皇は譲位2年前の44歳，親王は21歳。内容は，坐作進退を慎むべきこと，言語は音声を穏やかにすべきこと，学問を本とし，公事，詩歌，管弦，書法をも兼修すべきこと，小鳥の愛玩にふけるべからざることなど，皇子にそそぐこまやかな心情を推察することができる。
