Leaf insect (leaf insect)

Japanese: コノハムシ(木の葉虫) - コノハムシ（英語表記）leaf insect

A general term for insects belonging to the order Phasmida and family Phylliidae. Many of these insects have a flat, broad, green body, and the two forewings placed on their backs resemble a single leaf, giving them the appearance of a well-formed leaf as a whole, hence the name. This contrasts with most stick insects, which are rod-shaped and resemble twigs. The body length is about 70 mm. Leaf fragments are often attached to the legs and abdomen. Females have very short antennae, while males have long antennae. Females also have leaf-like forewings, while males have very short forewings.

ナナフシ目コノハムシ科Phylliidaeに属する昆虫の総称。この仲間の多くは体が扁平で幅広く，緑色で，しかも背中に置かれた2枚の前翅が1枚の木の葉に見え，全体としてもよくできた木の葉に見えるのでこの名がある。一般のナナフシ類が棒状になって，木の小枝を模しているのと対照的である。体長は70mm内外。脚や腹部には，しばしば葉片をつけることがある。触角は雌では非常に短いが，雄は長い。また前翅は，雌では木の葉状に発達するが，雄ではたいへん短い。
