Langhe

...Agriculture is diverse, ranging from low-productivity, small-scale farming centered on wheat and livestock farming in the depopulated mountain areas to large-scale capitalist rice farming (which accounts for more than half of the national production) in the well-irrigated plains of the Po River basin that straddles the provinces of Novara and Vercelli. After World War II, the cultivation of fruits such as apples and pears and vegetables such as peppers and celery has also become prominent. The hills of Monferrato in the center of the region and Langhe in the south are covered with vineyards, producing high-quality wine. In the 19th century, the woolen textile industry in Biella and other textile industries in the northern hills led the industrialization of the region, backed by abundant water power. Fiat in Turin, founded at the end of the 19th century, absorbed the labor force that flowed in from southern Italy and grew significantly, especially after World War II.
