According to ancient Indian mythology, solar and lunar eclipses are caused by the demon star Rāhu, a planet considered the king of shooting stars. In ancient times, when the gods gathered to drink Amrta, the drink of immortality that they had painstakingly created by churning the ocean, after recovering it from the demons, Rāhu cleverly disguised himself as one of the gods and blended in with them.
