Adalbert - Adalbert (English spelling)

Adalbert - Adalbert (English spelling)

A priest from the Bohemian noble family Slavnik. His Czech name was Vojtech. He became Bishop of Prague in 983 and tried to Christianize Czechs from a Benedictine monastery, but he came into conflict with powerful nobles and resigned in 988 to enter a monastery near Rome. He was sent to Prague again by Pope John XV in 992, but found it difficult to spread Christianity there, so he moved to Hungary, then Poland and Prussia to preach. He was supported by his friends Otto III (Holy Roman Emperor) and Bolesław I (King of Poland), but on April 23, 997, he was killed by pagans while on a mission in Pomerania and was canonized. In 1000, the Archbishopric of Poland was established in Gniezno, where he was buried. He is called the "Apostle of Prussia."
