…In the West, especially after the 12th century, with the rise of chivalry, Mary came to be called "Our Lady," or "Notre Dame" (French), "Nuestra Señora" (Spanish), "Unsere Liebe Frau" (German), "Our Lady" (English), and somewhat later in Italy, "Madonna." Also, because Mary was said to have conceived as a virgin, she was also referred to by a word meaning "virgin" (such as the English "the Virgin"). There are not many descriptions of Mary in the Gospels, and apart from her appearances in the childhood of Christ, such as in the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38), the Visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56), the Nativity (Luke 2:4-7), and Jesus among the Scholars (Teachers) (Luke 2:41-51), her name is only mentioned in the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1-11) and the Crucifixion (John 19:25-26) after Christ's public life. *Some of the terminology that mentions "the Virgin" is listed below.
