When measuring the dimensions of long, slender objects such as rulers, the support position can cause deformation and dimensional errors. For standard rulers with H- or X-shaped cross sections and graduations on the neutral plane, the support point that minimizes the measurement error of the total length is called the Bessel point. As shown in the figure, if the total length is L and the length from both ends to the support points is a, then the Bessel point is a = 0.2203 L. [Yokoyama Yutaka]

直尺など細長い形状のものの寸法を正確に測定する場合，支持する位置によって変形し寸法誤差が生ずる。H型あるいはX型断面形状で，中立面に目盛が施された標準尺では，全長の測定誤差を最小にする支持点をベッセル点という。図に示すように，全長をL，両端から支持する点までの長さをaとすればベッセル点はa＝0.2203Lである。【横山豊】
