When measuring the dimensions of long, slender objects such as rulers, the support position can cause deformation and dimensional errors. For standard rulers with H- or X-shaped cross sections and graduations on the neutral plane, the support point that minimizes the measurement error of the total length is called the Bessel point. As shown in the figure, if the total length is L and the length from both ends to the support points is a, then the Bessel point is a = 0.2203 L.
