Kanjiro Kawai - Kanjiro Kawai

Japanese:
Kanjiro Kawai - Kanjiro Kawai
Born: August 24, 1890 in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture
[Died] November 18, 1966. Kyoto ceramic artist. Graduated from the Ceramics Department of Tokyo Higher Technical School in 1914, he worked at the Kyoto Ceramic Testing Institute, where he met Hamada Shoji. In 1920, he established Shokei Kiln in Gojozaka, Kyoto, and became independent. Until around 1923, many of his works followed the techniques of ancient Chinese and Korean ceramics, but from around 1925, he became aware of the beauty of old folk crafts, and together with Hamada Shoji and Yanagi Muneyoshi, he started the folk craft movement. At the same time, he also incorporated the beauty of old folk crafts from Japan and Britain into his own work, and produced a series of tableware for everyday use, with simple, sturdy forms and a freewheeling use of a variety of glazing techniques. After World War II, he devised a combination of machine production and handwork, and devised techniques such as mud brush strokes and three-color glazing. His major works include "Celadon with Flowers and Blood Design" (1924), "Iron-painted Cinnabar Vase with Round Flower and Grass Design" (Grand Prize winner at the 1937 Paris World's Fair), "Liamond-shaped Flat Vase with Flower Design" (Grand Prize winner at the 1957 Milan Triennale), and "Flat Vase with Medicine" (1962).
