A place name found in articles related to the ancient Emishi. It appears in the Nihon Shoki, Shoku Nihongi, Nihon Koki, Sandai Jitsuroku, Nihon Kiryaku, Fuso Ryakuki, Ruiju Sandai Kaku, and other sources. It existed in the northern part of the Sea of Japan coast from the mid-7th century to the end of the 9th century. There is a theory that it was located near the Oshima Peninsula, but depending on the article, it can be seen as being in Hokkaido, the Tsugaru region, or within the jurisdiction of Dewa Province. It is possible that the perception of Oshima itself changed over time, making it impossible to pinpoint its location. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
