A place name found in articles related to the ancient Emishi. It appears in the Nihon Shoki, Shoku Nihongi, Nihon Koki, Sandai Jitsuroku, Nihon Kiryaku, Fuso Ryakuki, Ruiju Sandai Kaku, and other sources. It existed in the northern part of the Sea of Japan coast from the mid-7th century to the end of the 9th century. There is a theory that it was located near the Oshima Peninsula, but depending on the article, it can be seen as being in Hokkaido, the Tsugaru region, or within the jurisdiction of Dewa Province. 古代の蝦夷関係の記事に散見する地名。《日本書紀》《続日本紀》《日本後紀》《三代実録》《日本紀略》《扶桑略記》《類聚三代格》などにみえる。7世紀半ばから9世紀末までの間,日本海沿岸の北部に存在した。その所在地については,渡島(おしま)半島付近とする説もあるが,記事によって,北海道,津軽地方,出羽国管内のいずれとも見ることが可能である。渡嶋に対する認識自体が時代によって変化している可能性もあり,所在地の比定は不可能。
