A term used in Hindustani music (classical music of North India). It refers to the introductory part of a piece of music that is played before the main piece, without the tala (beat) of percussion instruments. It is a chance to present a melodic expression in which the melody is improvised as a certain raga (melody type), and the levels of expression are slightly different between vocal and instrumental music.
