A term used in Hindustani music (classical music of North India). It refers to the introductory part of a piece of music that is played before the main piece, without the tala (beat) of percussion instruments. It is a chance to present a melodic expression in which the melody is improvised as a certain raga (melody type), and the levels of expression are slightly different between vocal and instrumental music. In Carnatic music (classical music of South India), it is called ālāpana.

ヒンドゥスターニー音楽（北インドの古典音楽）の用語。音楽の導入部で，楽曲に先立って演奏される，打楽器によるターラ（拍節）を伴わない部分のこと。旋律を即興的に，一定のラーガ（旋律型）として提示する旋律的表現の聞かせどころであり，表現階梯は声楽と器楽とでは少し異なる。カルナータカ音楽（南インドの古典音楽）ではアーラーパナ。
