Shibue Chusai

Japanese: 渋江抽斎 - しぶえちゅうさい

1805-1858 A physician and Confucian scholar in the late Edo period.
Born November 8, 1819. Son of a physician in the Mutsu Hirosaki Domain (Aomori Prefecture). Learned medicine from Izawa Ranken and Confucianism from Kariya Ekisai. After working as a physician in the Hirosaki Domain, he became a lecturer at the Shogunate Medical School Seijukan, where he edited the Ishinpo. Well versed in historical research, he published Keiseki Hokoshi with Mori Risshi and others. Died of cholera on August 29, 1858. He was 54 years old. His given name was Zenzen Kaneyoshi. His pen names were Michizumi and Koyoshi.

文化2年11月8日生まれ。陸奥(むつ)弘前(ひろさき)藩(青森県)藩医の子。医学を伊沢蘭軒(らんけん),儒学を狩谷棭斎(かりや-えきさい)らにまなぶ。弘前藩医をへて,幕府医学館躋寿館(せいじゅかん)の講師となり,「医心方」の校訂にあたる。考証学に通じ,森立之(りっし)らと「経籍訪古志」をあらわした。安政5年8月29日コレラで死去。54歳。名は全善(かねよし)。字(あざな)は道純,子良。
