Sweden's largest island in the Baltic Sea, located in southeastern Sweden. It is based on limestone from the early Palaeozoic era, and the Gotlandic period was named after the island. Oats, rye, and sugar beets are cultivated, and sheep are raised on the island, which produces marble and cement. It was colonized by German merchants in the 12th century, and after a period of Hanseatic League and Danish rule, it became part of Sweden in 1645. It comprises one county, including the island of Fall to the northeast. Visby, the capital, has many remains of a Hanseatic city, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995. Area: 3,134 km2 . Population: 57,241 (2012). → Related articleBaltic Sea | Visby Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
