Born: February 21, 1903, Paris
[Died] January 14, 1977, Los Angeles. American female writer and diarist. Born to a Spanish composer and a French mother, she came to America in 1914. She spent the 1920s and 1930s in Paris and the 1940s in New York, where she was friends with E. Wilson, H. Miller, and L. Durrell. Influenced by surrealism, she wrote novels such as House of Incest (1936), a fantastical prose poem. Her diary, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, which has been published since 1966, is highly regarded not only as a source of information on the writers with whom she was in contact, but also as an excellent psychological analysis of her own life.
