The origins of Russian theater are the same as in other countries, and they are based on ancient folk games and rituals. The first professional performers, skomorokhs, who could sing, dance, perform skits, puppet shows, perform animal tricks, and perform magic tricks, were born in the 10th century, but Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, who disliked their popularity and rebellious spirit, banned them in 1648.
