Goto clan

Japanese: 五島氏 - ごとううじ

A feudal lord with a stipend of 12,530 koku in the early modern period who ruled over Goto in Matsuura County, Hizen Province (present-day Minami Matsuura County, Nagasaki Prefecture). The Uku clan, whose base was Uku Island in Matsuura County, Hizen Province (present-day Uku Town, Kita Matsuura County, Nagasaki Prefecture), moved to Fukue Island in 1383 (Kōwa 3/Eitoku 3) during the time of Uku Satoru, and his son Katsu established his base in Fukae (present-day Fukue City, Nagasaki Prefecture). He later pacified Goto, and in 1587 (Tensho 15), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi came to Kyushu to subjugate the Shimazu clan, he submitted to him and was granted control of Goto. In 1592 (Bunroku 1), when he set out for the Bunroku War, he changed his surname to Goto.

肥前国松浦郡五島(現，長崎県南松浦郡)を領有した1万2530石の近世大名。肥前国松浦郡宇久島(現，長崎県北松浦郡宇久町)を本拠とした宇久氏は，1383年(弘和3∥永徳3)宇久覚の代に福江島に移住し，その子勝は本拠を深江(現，長崎県福江市)に定めた。そののち五島を平定し，1587年(天正15)島津征伐のため九州に下向した豊臣秀吉に帰伏し，五島の支配地を安堵された。92年(文禄1)文禄の役出陣に当たり，姓を五島氏と改めた。
