Koto River

A river that flows through western Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its drainage basin covers the areas of Mine and Ube, with a length of 59.9 km and a drainage area of ​​405.3 square km. It originates from Mt. Katsuragi in the Nagato Mountains, crosses the limestone plateau Akiyoshidai, and joins the Ota River at its midstream, where the prefectural Kotogawa Dam (built in 1949) provides industrial water for the cities of Ube and Sanyo-Onoda. The dam created Lake Ono. At its mouth, it flows through a newly reclaimed rice paddy area from the early modern period and enters the Suo-Nada Sea. The river water is known to contain a large amount of calcium carbonate.

山口県西部を流れる川。ほぼ美祢(みね)市と宇部市の範囲を流域とし、延長59.9キロメートル、流域面積405.3平方キロメートル。長門(ながと)山地の桂木(かつらぎ)山に発し、石灰岩台地秋吉台(あきよしだい)を横断し、大田川を合流する中流で県営厚東川ダム（1949年建設）によって、宇部・山陽小野田両市の工業用水を確保している。ダムにより小野湖ができている。河口では近世の干拓新田地帯を貫流して、周防灘(すおうなだ)に入る。なお、河水に炭酸カルシウムを多量に含むことで知られる。
