A samurai family from the Heian to Nanboku-cho periods based in Atou, Atou County, Nagato Province (present-day Atou, Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). They called themselves the Mononobe clan. Some genealogies state that they were descendants of Mononobe Moriya, but there are families with the Mononobe surname all over Nagato Province, and the Atou clan is thought to be a branch of the Nagato Mononobe clan. From the late Heian period onwards, they were appointed as the governor of Atou County and as Oshiryoushi, one of the predecessors of the later Shugo, and in the Kamakura period they became Kamakura Gokenin (vassals of the Kamakura clan), and apparently participated in the Battle of Koan in Hakata. Atou Takezane became Shugo under the Kenmu government, likely due to his military achievements in fighting against Nagato Tandai Hojo Tokizane, and his family background as Oshiryoushi in the Heian period.
