Stradivari - Antonio Stradivari

Stradivari - Antonio Stradivari

Italian string instrument maker. He is considered the greatest violin maker in history, and it is said that the current standard violin was created by him. In the 1660s, he became a student of Nicola Amati, and inherited the Cremona violin-making tradition that had continued for over 100 years. He left Amati between 1680 and 1690, and thereafter pursued his own style, creating instruments with larger and richer tones than Amati's. The instruments made between 1700 and 1720 are the most beautiful of Stradivari's works. There are about 650 string instruments in existence, of which about 600 are violins. There are also cellos and violas, but his instruments have the name Antonius Stradivarius Cremonenfis on the label, so they are called "Stradivarius" and are still played by many famous performers today. He died in Cremona on December 18, 1737, at the age of 92. His sons also made instruments, but they were under the control of their father, who outlived his father, and so did not achieve prominence.
