584‐629 Merovingian king of the Franks. Reigned 584-629. Son of Neustrian king Hilperich I. He succeeded to the throne shortly after birth after his father was murdered. After the death of his grandfather Chlothar I, the Frankish kingdom was divided into separate states, and conflicts and feuds continued, but in 613 he achieved unification of the kingdom with the support of the country's noble families. The following year, in 614, he issued the Edict of Paris, which stipulated that influential people with territories in the region be appointed as counts, showing that he made concessions to the noble families in exchange for unification.
