Japanese: モルフォチョウ

A general term for the family Morphoidae in the order Lepidoptera. Sometimes considered a subfamily of the family Nymphalidae. Found only in Central and South America, there are over 50 species. They are divided into three groups: the brown or olive-colored sun butterflies, the light blue water morphos, and the metallic blue-green retenor and menelaus morphos. The larvae feed on dicotyledonous plants such as the Fabaceae family. The sun butterflies (span 170 mm) are known as the largest butterflies in the Western Hemisphere. The metallic species are also processed into accessories and interior decorations for sale.
