Ascension of Christ - Christ's Shoten (English spelling) Ascension

Ascension of Christ - Christ's Shoten (English spelling) Ascension
A theme in Christian art. This iconography, which is based on Acts 1:9-11 and is composed of Jesus ascending to heaven, angels helping him, and the apostles and the Virgin Mary looking down on him from the earth, can be divided into two types. One is a representation of Jesus ascending to heaven, held by the hand of an angel or the Father, seen from behind or in the profile, which is common in early Western Christian art. The other is a representation of Jesus ascending standing or seated on a throne, facing forward, supported by an angel, which is common in Byzantine art. However, over time, the two types merged, and in the Gothic and Renaissance periods, Jesus was depicted floating in the air by himself. Famous examples include the illustrations in the Syriac Labratory Gospel (586) and Giotto's frescoes (1305-10) in the Scrovegni Chapel (Arena Chapel) in the early 14th century.
