Founder of the Da Xia Dynasty of the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms in China. Descendant of the Southern Xiongnu Chanyu (Zhenyu). His courtesy name was Qu Ba. Initially under the protection of the Later Qin Dynasty, he rebelled against the Later Qin Dynasty and declared independence (407), becoming the Heavenly King Da Chanyu and calling his state Da Xia. Later he changed his surname to Helian. In the 5th year of the Fengxiang era (417), Liu Yu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (later Emperor Wu of the Song Dynasty) destroyed the Later Qin Dynasty, but Bobo attacked the garrison troops, seized Chang'an, and re-established himself as emperor (418). Bobo was a cruel man, and the people suffered under his cruel governance.

中国,五胡十六国の大夏の建国者。南匈奴単于 (ぜんう) の子孫。字は屈孑 (くつけつ) 。初め後秦の保護を受けていたが,後秦にそむいて独立し (407) ,天王大単于となり,国を大夏と称した。のち姓を赫連に改めた。鳳翔5 (417) 年東晋の劉裕 (のちの宋の武帝) が後秦を滅ぼしたが,勃勃はその留守軍を襲って長安を奪い,あらためて皇帝の位についた (418) 。勃勃は性格が残忍で,人民はその非道な政治に苦しんだ。
