Born: April 23, 1804 in Stockholm [Died] April 24, 1884. An Italian ballerina who represents the Marseille Romantic Ballet era. Born into a ballet family, she received a strict education from her father, F. Taglioni. She made her debut in 1822 in "The Feast of the Young Nymphs at the Palace of Terpsichore." In 1832, she danced in the premiere of "La Sylphide," the first Romantic ballet choreographed by her father, at the Paris Opera, and established her fame. After that, she shared the same popularity with her contemporary, F. Elssler, and toured all over Europe. She was called "a ballerina that ladies liked" because she was not blessed with good looks and lacked sexual appeal, but her superhuman light steps were described as heavenly. She is also said to have been the first ballerina to wear the skirt-like tutu that is common today, and is said to have established the technique of pointe (standing on tiptoes). Other notable works she performed in include The Maids of the Danube, Pas de Quatre, and The Gypsies, and her only choreographic work was Butterfly (1860).
