A British merchant ship that was the first ocean-going ship to be equipped with a screw propeller. It was also the first large iron merchant ship. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59), construction began at a shipyard in Bristol in 1839 and was completed in 1843. It was 96.6m long, 15.5m wide, and had a displacement of 3,618 tons. It ran aground in the Irish Sea in 1846, but was lowered and reused the following year, which increased confidence in the durability of iron ships.
