Araki Kodo

Japanese: 荒木古童 - あらきこどう
Araki Kodo

The stage name of a Kinko-ryu shakuhachi performer. There have been five generations to date. The first Kinko-ryu shakuhachi performer (?-1851) was born Toyoda Katsugoro, and the second and subsequent generations were called Araki Kodo. The second Kinko-ryu shakuhachi performer (1823-1908) was born Araki Hanzaburo, and was the third son of Araki Kamezaburo, a samurai of the Minakuchi domain. He loved the shakuhachi from an early age, and at the age of 14 he became a disciple of Yokota Goryu, learning gaikyoku. Later, while training as a komuso monk, he met the first Kinko-ryu and became his disciple, and after his teacher's death, he became the second Kinko-ryu performer. He further studied honkyoku under Hisamatsu Fuyo, and took the name Baikyoku. When the Fuke sect was abolished at the beginning of the Meiji era (1871), he made an effort to revive the shakuhachi, and is known as the founder of the Kinko-ryu school. He improved the fingering hole position and mouthpiece of the shakuhachi, and worked to popularize the sankyoku shakuhachi (outer circle). In 1896 (Meiji 29), he handed over the name of the 3rd generation Kodo (1879-1935) to his eldest son Shinnosuke, and changed it to Chikuo. From then on, his biological sons continued to succeed him, leading to the 4th generation (1902-1943) and the 5th generation (1938- ).
