An independent kingdom that flourished in a corner of the Bay of Bengal, southwest of Myanmar, until 1785. According to legend, a boy named Marayu was born to Ajna, the lord of the Indian fortress of Kapira, who had retired to the upper reaches of the Kaladan River, and a doe. When he reached adulthood, he conquered the surrounding barbarians and built Dhanyawadi. This is said to be the origin of the Arakan state. There is also a theory that the origin of the state was when Kanyasarji, who was defeated in the bid to succeed the throne of the Tagaung state, built Dhanyawadi. Due to its topography, it has had close ties with Bengal since ancient times, and according to a Sanskrit inscription unearthed at the Wetali ruins, Arakan was a place of worship for the god Shiva in the 5th and 6th centuries, and Mahayana Buddhism in the 7th and 8th centuries.
