...In premodern Japan, it was a common name for painful internal diseases that could not be clearly diagnosed at the medical level of the time, and was lumped together as if they were a single syndrome. It was simply called "colic" or "atahara." In the Heian period, "Ishinpo" states, "colic is painful. Sometimes the patient has abdominal pain and is unable to urinate or defecate. Sometimes the hands and feet are cold and the pain around the navel causes white sweat. Sometimes the cold air rises and pierces the heart and abdomen, causing heartache or intestinal pain." In the Edo period, "Tankai" states that the white, thin worms that come out during defecation are "senki no mushi," and according to this, colic was a parasitic disease. ...
