Goshikinuma Lake

Japanese:
Goshikinuma Lake

A group of lakes and ponds scattered on the northern foot of Mt. Bandai in northern Fukushima Prefecture. In July 1888 (Meiji 21), water accumulated in a depression in the mudflow deposits pushed out by the great explosion of Mt. Bandai, and numerous small ponds are distributed over an area of about 3 kilometers. They are divided into three groups based on their location: from the west, Yanaginuma Lakes and Ponds (Yaroku Numa, Yanaginuma, etc.), Benten Lakes and Ponds (Benten Numa, Ruri Numa, Aonuma, etc.), and Bishamon Numa Lakes and Ponds (Midoro Numa, Akanuma, Ido Numa, etc.), and each group has a unique color due to the difference in water quality. In particular, Ruri Numa has a whitish blue color due to the calcium sulfate particles it contains, and Akanuma has a reddish lake surface due to iron oxides that adhere to the aquatic plants.

Additionally, there is another lake called Goshikinuma, located between Mt. Issaikyo and Mt. Iegata on Mt. Azuma, northeast of Mt. Bandai. It has an area of 0.03 square kilometers. It is a crater lake, and its deep indigo water surface is said to change to five different colors depending on the weather.
