Hungarian mythologist. Studied at the universities of Budapest and Berlin. From 1943 he lived in Switzerland and taught in various parts of Europe. His academic style was heavily influenced by Bachofen, Burckhardt, Nietzsche, and Jung. He was a member of the Eranos Conference, and is known for his friendship with T. Mann and H. Hesse. His major works include Dionysus, The Labyrinth and Myth, Myths and Ancient Religion, and Greek Mythology. His co-authored works Introduction to Mythology and Trickster, co-authored with Jung and P. Radin, also gained many readers.
