In addition to Johann Strauss II's "The Blue Danube," works by Richard Strauss and György Ligeti were used as film music, opening up new horizons in science fiction films.

アメリカ・イギリス合作映画。1968年作品。作家アーサー・C・クラークとスタンリー・キューブリックがアイデアを出しあってまとめた物語に基づき、クラークは小説を書き、キューブリックが映画を製作した。はるかかなたからの光が両脇を飛び去っていくイメージを生み出すスリット・スキャンなどの技術開発だけでなく、ディテールの考証や再現に、NASAやIBMをはじめ、多くの科学者、特撮のスペシャリストらが参加した巨大なプロジェクトとなった。人類が類人猿の時代に出現し、彼らが道具・武器を使う人類への進化を促した謎(なぞ)の物体モノリスが、人類が宇宙に進出する時代になって月で発掘され、それが発信する信号の極秘探査が行われる。探査中の宇宙船の船長はやがてモノリスと遭遇、驚愕(きょうがく)の体験を経て人類を超越したスターチャイルドへと進化を遂げる。それまでのSF映画を根底から覆し、70ミリシネラマスクリーンを通して、あたかも宇宙にいるかのように体感させ、人々の宇宙へのイメージを決定づけた。ヨハン・シュトラウス2世の「美しく青きドナウ」の他、リヒャルト・シュトラウス、ジェルジュ・リゲティの作品などが映画音楽として使われ、SF映画に新境地を開いた。
