It was established in 1922 under the International Council for Scientific Research with the aim of promoting geographical research, and later became an organization under the International Council for Scientific Research (now the International Council for Science). Its predecessor was the International Council of Geographers. Japan is represented by the Science Council of Japan, which is in charge of the Geographical Research Liaison Committee.
