A surface (ruled surface) formed by all the straight lines that pass through all the points on the curve C and are parallel to a fixed line is called a cylinder. The straight lines in this case are called the generating lines of the cylinder. A surface (ruled surface) formed by all the straight lines connecting all the points on the curve C to a fixed point that is not on C is called a cone. The straight lines in this case are called the generating lines of the cone. In such cases, the curve C is called the director line. In this way, generating lines are the straight lines that weave the ruled surface.

曲線 C上のすべての点を通り，一定直線に平行なすべての直線によってつくられる曲面 (線織面 ) を柱面という。このときの直線を柱面の母線という。また曲線 C上のすべての点と，C上にない一定点とを結んだすべての直線によってつくられる曲面 (線織面) を錐面という。このときの直線を錐面の母線という。なお，このようなとき，曲線 Cのことを導線 director lineと呼ぶ。このように母線は，線織面を織る直線をいう。
