An island at the west entrance of Tokuyama Bay in southern Yamaguchi Prefecture. It belongs to Shunan City. Its area is 4.73 square kilometers. In the early modern period, it was a branch village of Tonda, and later became a village under the Tokuyama Domain. During World War II, it was part of the Tokuyama naval port, and was the base for the Kaiten human torpedoes. There is the Kaiten Memorial Museum, which exhibits materials related to the Kaiten. Small settlements along the coast include the stonemason village of Setohama, Kario, the farming villages of Motoura and Amagaura, the fishing village of Yanagigaura, and Umajima. Part of the island is designated as part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park. There is a regular ferry service between Umajima Port and Tokuyama Port. Population: 264 (2009).
