Annual meadow grass

Japanese: スズメノカタビラ - すずめのかたびら(英語表記)annual meadow grass
Annual meadow grass

An annual or biennial grass of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culms are clumpy, 10-30 cm tall, and soft and not rough. The leaves are 4-10 cm long and have obtuse tips. From March to November, the culms bear broad ovate, 4-8 cm long, panicle-shaped inflorescences at the tips of the culms, with two branches at each node of the main axis. The spikelets are ovate, 3-5 mm long, sometimes tinged purple, and contain 3-5 florets. The glumes are bluntly pointed, about 3 mm long, with a transparent membranous edge, and densely covered with fluff below the middle of the dorsal side. The keel of the inner glume has fluff. It grows in vacant lots, fields, and roadsides throughout Japan, and is distributed worldwide. The name comes from the fact that the edges of the leaf sheaths and glumes are membranous, resembling a thin, single-layered garment.
