A theorist of feminism (women's liberation). While studying theology in Paris, she discovered and fell in love with Cartesian philosophy, abandoned Catholicism, and moved to Geneva to become a language teacher. She published anonymously De Bodie and Mind Concerning the Equality of the Sexes (1673), De Masculinum Superiorità (1675), and De Educación de la las Femininas (1679). In these works, she applied Descartes' methodological skepticism to sociology, especially feminism, and was the first man to thoroughly develop an argument for breaking down the prejudice that men are intellectually and physically superior. In his second work, he used indirect proof to argue that women's physical and civil servitude was merely the result of chance, violence, and habit, and went on to think about the necessity of a social contract between power and the people.

フェミニズム(女性解放)の理論家。パリで神学を学ぶうちにデカルト哲学を知り傾倒，カトリック教義をすてジュネーブに移って語学教師となる。《両性の平等に関する身体および精神論》(1673)，《男性優位論》(1675)，《婦人教育論》(1679)を匿名で出版し，デカルトの方法的懐疑を社会学，特にフェミニズムに適用し，男性の知的･身体的優越という偏見を打ち破る論を，男性としてはじめて徹底的に展開した。第2作では帰謬法(間接証明)を用い，女性の身体的･市民的隷属は偶然と暴力と習慣の結果にすぎないとし，さらに権力と民衆の社会契約の必要性の思想にまで至っている。
