1647‐1725 A theorist of feminism (women's liberation). While studying theology in Paris, she discovered and fell in love with Cartesian philosophy, abandoned Catholicism, and moved to Geneva to become a language teacher. She published anonymously De Bodie and Mind Concerning the Equality of the Sexes (1673), De Masculinum Superiorità (1675), and De Educación de la las Femininas (1679). In these works, she applied Descartes' methodological skepticism to sociology, especially feminism, and was the first man to thoroughly develop an argument for breaking down the prejudice that men are intellectually and physically superior. In his second work, he used indirect proof to argue that women's physical and civil servitude was merely the result of chance, violence, and habit, and went on to think about the necessity of a social contract between power and the people.
