A former town in Ayauta County, located in central Kagawa Prefecture, halfway between Takamatsu and Sakaide. It is a farming area where rice, wheat and fruit are grown, but the Yosan Line and National Route 11 run through it, and the number of factories and houses is increasing. It was the center of the ancient Sanuki Province, and is home to the ruins of Kokubunji Temple (a special historic site), the ruins of Kokubun Nunnery Temple (historic site), and Kokubunji Temple, the 80th temple of the 88 Shikoku temples. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Takamatsu City along with Aji Town and Mure Town in Kida County, and Kagawa Town and Konan Town in Kagawa County. 26.25 km2 . 香川県中部,高松・坂出両市の中間にある綾歌(あやうた)郡の旧町。米麦,果樹を栽培する農村地帯であるが,予讃線,国道11号線が通じ,工場や住宅も増加している。古代の讃岐(さぬきの)国の中心で,国分寺跡(特別史跡),国分尼寺跡(史跡),四国八十八ヵ所80番札所国分寺がある。2006年1月木田郡庵治町,牟礼町,香川郡香川町,香南町と高松市へ編入。26.25km2。2万4228人(2003)。
