...these are the canons of the various dioceses, the most representative being the orders of Saint-Ruf in southern France and Premontre in northern France. They had a variety of missions, including anti-heresy preaching, evangelizing, and protecting pilgrims, but because their standard was the Augustinian Rules, they are also called Augustinian canons. The Dominicans are a similar order of priests, but they eventually placed emphasis on scholarship and produced many scholars.
