Yushi Odashima

1930－ An English literature scholar and theater critic from the late Showa to Heisei eras.
Born on December 18, 1930 in Mukden (now Shenyang), Manchuria (northeastern China). After working as a lecturer at Tsuda University, he became a professor at the University of Tokyo in 1988. He later became a professor at Bunkyo Gakuin University and director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. In 1966, he joined the Bungakuza Theatre Company. In 1973, he began translating Shakespeare's complete plays, completing the translation in 1980. He was awarded the Arts Encouragement Prize in the same year, and in 2002 was named a Person of Cultural Merit. In 2011, he was awarded the Yomiuri Theater Award Art Honorary Award. He graduated from the University of Tokyo. His other works include Modern Drama Theory, John Osborne, Shakespeare in the Coffee House, The Way of Pranks, and The Clown's Nose.

昭和5年12月18日満州(中国東北部)奉天(現瀋陽)生まれ。津田塾大講師などをへて,昭和63年東大教授。のち文京学院大教授,東京芸術劇場館長。昭和41年文学座に参加。48年よりシェークスピア全戯曲の翻訳にとりかかり,55年訳了。同年芸術選奨。平成14年文化功労者。23年読売演劇大賞芸術栄誉賞。東大卒。著作はほかに「現代演劇論」「ジョン・オズボーン」「珈琲店のシェークスピア」「駄ジャレの流儀」「道化の鼻」など。
